If like me you are mourning the passing of David Bowie yesterday - and yes, I've had Life on Mars going around in my head all day - try this lovely little ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] gillo in which Spike remembers Bowie. It's just perfect in every way. In Memoriam

I bet you the screen has gone all misty now...

Firstly, a disclaimer – I’ve never watched Oz, and I’ve never watched Law & Order: SVU and if you’re in the same boat as me, don’t let it deter you from reading one of the best fics I’ve read in a very long time.

Someone Like You by the incomparable [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove is set after Oz finishes, so imagines what happens when one of the series’ main protagonists, Tobias Beecher tries to settle back into normal life – or at least what might pass as one for someone with addiction issues after 8 years in a maximum security prison. Then one night, he sees Detective Elliot Stabler a crime scene and his world comes tumbling down because Elliot looks just like Toby’s lover from prison, Chris Keller. (Actor Christopher Meloni played both Chris Keller and Elliot Stabler in their respective series)

If you haven’t seen the series, do what I did and treat the characters as OC’s, and if you have seen one or both of the series, you’ll appreciate drsquid’s take on them. Oh and because we find out about what happened to Toby in prison at the same time as Elliot does, again, the lack of series knowledge is never an issue.

So why should you read this story? Apart from the truly excellent writing, the great plotting and the well thought out pacing and rhythm, this is a story where I really cared what happened to the characters. And not just the major ones. All the characters are well drawn and each has their breathing space within the story, so no-one feels superfluous to the tale.

But the main point of this story is Toby and Elliot. These two men are drowning emotionally and slowly start to find some common ground in the oddest friendship that is built on ever shifting sands of need, denial, lies and unexpected moments of tenderness. I shouted at them, I cheered for them, I sighed for them, and once or twice I even cried for them.

If you’re looking for something meaty and wonderful to get your teeth into, then I can thoroughly recommend this story. It’s by drsquidlove, so really, what other recommendation do you need?

There are the many reading options:

Someone Like You – at LJ (so you can view other people’s comments as the good doctor was first posting this story)

Smeone Like You – at Dr Squid’s website

Someone Like You – at A03.

See, I’ve done the hard work, so there’s no excuse not to go read, if you haven't already, and go back and reread if this is a road already travelled. Seriously, if you only read one more story between now and the end of the year, make sure it's this one - just my opinion, of course! *g*

Thank you to whoever nominated my ficlet Searching for Jim at the current round of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards.

I’ve got a very soft spot for the boys in this story and it brings back very fond memories of strolling around Paris a couple of summers back. The story is nominated in the categories, Best Pairing Unconventional, Best Romance and Best Slash. There are a pile of super stories nominated in these categories and all the others so go check them all out right here. Nominations are open until the end of May, so there’s plenty of time to fly the flag for your favourite fics if someone hasn’t got there before you.

I’m conscious that I’m still not around much – RL is still all consuming and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. But I have two story ideas whispering to me, so I’m going to let them fester at the back of my brain and see if anything usable comes out as and when I get time to think things through properly.

In the meantime, here’s a drive by rec for anyone who didn’t catch it, check out [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine’s latest Last Man Standing. Beautifully written as ever, also nominated at the SunnyD Awards and deservedly so.

That’s All Folks....

So, I’m really not around at the moment – you may or may not have noticed. I’m so not around that I might as well be on a desert island. Which got me thinking... and yes, I know you can hear the noise from Alaska *g*

If I was on a desert island, and was playing the equivalent of desert island discs, what would be my top ten fics that I’d want to have on my ereader. And because I’m on this island, as Giles points out in Restless, these fics are ‘all about the journey’ – and there are lots of types of journeys to be had.

Ten Desert Island Fics...and a few extra! )

I have to thank [livejournal.com profile] thismaz for reccing this story to me, and it’s so brilliant I thought I’d pass on the love. If you like John/Sherlock and you like AU’s then you will love this, and even if you’re not into AU’s and yes, you know who you are... *g*, I really urge you to have a go at this story because it’s well worth it.

Anyway, without further ado, go read The Tennis series by Jupiter_Ash because it’s gorgeous. John is facing his last Wimbledon and his career is fading fast, while Sherlock is an impossibly difficult, brilliant rising star. There really shouldn’t be any connection there, really there shouldn’t...

This series is obviously slash, but that’s not the be all and end all of it. The characterisation is terrific, the voices are great and the storylines are excellently plotted. And you’ll find yourself learning a lot about tennis by default, although it’s very naturally done as part of the narrative. There are four stories in all – the two main ones weigh in at around 100,000 words each and there are two one shots, the second of which just killed me when I read it. So plenty to keep you occupied and out of mischief.

Anyway, if I can persuade you to read, I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Since I’m on a reccing mood at the moment I thought I would mention that my all time favourite BTVS human AU fic is now up on AO3. Those of you who know me well will not be surprised that it’s Nessuno by [livejournal.com profile] riani1.

I’m usually very wary of human AU’s because, well, I want the characters I love from Buffy to be those characters, because those are the characters I fell in love with when watching the show and not some other characters who just happen to have Spike and Xander's names. So for the longest time I didn’t read Nessuno because the idea of Spike as a 15th century soldier of fortune working for a mercenary company in Italy, and Xander as a young, pretty naïve novice priest in the Vatican seemed a bit out there, even given how eclectic my reading tastes are.

But when I eventually gave in and read it, many years ago, I just fell in love and kept on falling. Spike, here called Guglielmo, also known as Il Sanguinante is Spike through and through – hot, sardonic and dangerous as hell. Xander is also very recognisable as an ordinary young man, suddenly caught up in a series of extraordinary events over which he has no control and that threaten to knock him off his feet, but through these events he finds a strength he didn’t know he had and a passion that he had no idea existed.

Add in the Borgias, labyrinthine intrigue, Giles as a member of the Inquisition, Angelus as head of the mercenary company and an evil stalking the halls of Vatican and you have a gorgeous mix that makes me hum with happiness every time I read it – and believe me I’ve read it dozens of times.

If you don’t like slash, I’d still recommend this, because the love and lust is mainly unrealised. The story here is the thing and the passion is actually all the better for being mainly unfulfilled.

So if you haven’t read this, I’d give it 11 out of 10 and say go read it now. If you’ve already read it and enjoyed it, then having it up at AO3 makes it even easier to download onto the e-reader of your choice and wallow in it all over again.

BTW – did I mention that I love this fic! *g*

Hope all is going well with everyone. It’s snowing here – it’s really not meant to do that on the west coast, so I may have to ask for my money back! :)

I’m a reccing demon at the moment, but it’s a delight to the wave the flag for such a lot of lovely fic.

Today it’s Maxima Culpa by [livejournal.com profile] aadler. We’re so used to be immersed in the lives of the Scoobies and their adversaries, but this story looks at the consequences of life on the Hellmouth on one of the people who just happens to get caught in the middle of the battle. Not only is this an excellent look inside an original character’s head, it also, at least to me anyway, casts an interesting light on Buffy, and the decisions she makes as part of her calling.

This isn’t a long fic and is definitely worth a look if you want to read something just a little different.

So this morning I had the best of intentions of starting an update to my rec lists, because I've got a ton of stuff to add from the last couple of years. The trouble is I got distracted reading some of the stuff that's on the lists already that I haven't read in a while. Sigh...

One of them was [livejournal.com profile] baudown's For My Pains, A World Of Sighs. I'd forgotten just how beautiful this fic is. As always with [livejournal.com profile] baudown's writing, it's elegant, beautifully written and I want to wallow in her use of language, but it's her Spike that makes this story - tragic and predatory, seductive and brutal - he really is intoxicating and his encounter with Xander towards the end will stab you in the gut and you'll think the pain is quite exquisite.

The term 'Shades of Grey' could have been coined for this story, so if you haven't read it, go do so now, and if you have read it, then do yourself a favour, make like a sparrow and go read it again.

I know, I know, I don't do a random rec for ages and then they are like buses with two in one week.

Much as I'm a dyed in the wool Xander girl, I do have a huge soft spot for Oz and [livejournal.com profile] perpetual has written the most beautiful Oz fic Chorus in which many years after Sunnydale, Oz reconnects with the one person who changed everything for him.

I can't tell you how much I loved this - it's short, beautifully written, with lovely characterisation and paints a scenario that I've never seen, but in retrospect seems so obvious that it's difficult to think that it's not canon. I found it via the [livejournal.com profile] su_herald so many thanks to the mods for the link, and if I can point more people towards the pretty then my work here is done.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

It’s well documented that I’m something of a fan of [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine’s Giles/Xander fic, because she writes them beautifully. However this week she’s been all about Spike (hmm, good name for a fic archive…). Or I should say all about Spike, and Giles, Wesley and the Scoobies and a couple of passing OCs.

Go No More A-Roving is a super, seven part story in which Giles and Spike move on in various ways, the Scoobies struggle with the need to move on, Wesley pushes his boundaries and the OCs have encounters that are likely to leave them with very odd dreams! *g*

If you want a completed story that’s well written, has excellent characterisation and an immensely satisfying payoff then I can thoroughly recommend it, but do read the warning at the start of the first chapter!

Snowflake Challenge – Day 7

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Or a picspam. Something.

The muse is feeling a little cranky at the moment so I don’t want to upset it by making it write something off the cuff. See, I need to be crafty and sneak up on it when it’s not looking. So to that end I’m going to shame it into submission by reccing something gorgeous that I just read this morning. *g*

I love it when I come across a fic that just makes me want to go out and grab random people in the street and tell them that they have to read it. Okay, I know that probably makes me strange and a little scary, but I like to think of it as enthusiastic and slightly endearing.

Anyway I’ve just spent the last week or so wallowing in linman’s Tenebrae series. There are fourteen parts of varying lengths making up the whole and in total the series weighs in at – wait for it – just over 500,000 words!

What’s the story about? - It starts when a young academic finds herself in another dimension, in Sunnydale, during season 5. She and the Scooby gang have to race against time to return her home before things go completely pear shaped.

Why do I love it? – Because this author uses words beautifully and knows how to plot both the short and long games of a story this size. Because her canon characters are written with understanding and depth and because her OC’s are vivid and glow with life. In fact in this story, I don’t even think of them as OC’s because this universe wouldn’t exist without them.

Mainly I love it because the author has written a Giles who is as strong as he is fragile – a man who is staggering under his burdens, but is also willing to leave himself vulnerable to the possibility that he could have a life as well as a calling.

I can’t really say any more other than that having finished it, I’m tempted to go back to the beginning and start again because I’m sure that there is a ton of detail and nuance I missed in my headlong rush to know what happens next.

It might not be everyone's cup of cocoa, but I'd urge you to at least give it a go. I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.

I'm not at all active in Due South fandom but I do love the characters when I watch the series. Here's a lovely little piece from [livejournal.com profile] baudown in which Ray K wants something and Fraser is pretty sure that he doesn't. I love the way she gets under Fraser's skin and the last paragraph really got under mine - although the writing throughout the whole thing is quite lovely.

So even if you can't imagine reading Due South fic, do yourself a favour and check out 9:18.

So I’m sitting here trying to find something coherent to say. I genuinely thought I’d read everything that the lovely [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove had written, because really, why would I not considering the gorgeousness of what she writes. But I was wrong and I’ve just been sitting here for the last ten minutes pretty speechless.

Reckless by [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove was written way back in 2008 and it is a core four sexfest.

It’s set after the enjoining spell at the end of S4.The magic from the spell is singing through the Scoobies’ veins and the good doctor imagines what might have happened next, and let’s just say that the first Slayer is nowhere to be seen. This three parter is hot, erotic, vivid and slightly disturbing. Four very good reasons to read it if you haven’t already, and still four very good reasons to reread it if you’ve already been there once, or twice or however many times you’ve had the stamina for.

That’s all I’ve got to say because I’m going off to lie down now.

If you’re short of something to read at the moment and you’re in the mood for a bit of stunningly executed h/c, then trip over to [livejournal.com profile] raynejelly’s journal and read Ride a Pale Horse. Spike sees Xander die, but that’s only the beginning because things may not be as they seem.

The author’s use of language and imagery is extraordinary, and some of the sentences are as beautiful as paintings – I just want to stare at them and wallow in pictures they create. I should say that there is an awful lot of hurt in this story, but most of it is implied, rather than gratuitous and quality of comfort is outstanding. I also adored the characterisation of this particular version of the boys.

There is one wacky continuity issue (as the author put it!) in one of the early chapters, where I went, hang on what’s going on, but it’s fairly obvious, pretty quickly what’s happening, so please don’t let that throw you if you give this story a try. The story is complete as it is, but [livejournal.com profile] raynejelly has said that phase 2 of the story is planned, and I’m can't wait, because Ride a Pale Horse has definitely been one of the highlights of my fic reading year so far.

If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favour and check it out.

I know there are a few Dorothy Dunnett aficionado’s on my Flist, so this is for you, and for anyone else who just likes to read something lovely. I had no idea there was a Lymond fandom until a wee while ago, because quite frankly I couldn’t imagine else writing him, or that world. However I was ambling through [livejournal.com profile] crack_van a while go and came across a few Lymond fics. There’s at least one total crack fic – The Zombie Master of Culter (you can search that one out if you feel the urge!)

However, I fell in love with Thirst for Pleasure by Nelladel, written for the 2005 Yuletide Treasure. It involves one of the most complicated triangle’s in the Lymond books – Jerott Blyth, Marthe and Lymond himself. Although Lymond isn’t actually present in the story, the story itself is all about him. It’s only 1,100 words, but not one of them is wasted, so go read and wallow. Unfortunately the comments page no longer works, which is a shame because it’s a story that deserves a pile of kudos. (And talking of kudos, yes I checked AO3 to see if it’s posted there, but alas no.)

Most of you know that my Giles/Xander love is second only to my Spike/Xander love and there's a gorgeous story by [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine called Strategic Pluralism that is all kinds of gorgeous. It's a "Fuck or Die" fic, but even if that's not your cup of tea, don't let it put you off because it really is beautifully done - great characterisation and voices, nice plotting and a lot of heat. Even better, it's now finished, so you can go and wallow to your heart's content. And if that's not enough, she wrote a wonderful sequel The Britpick Fic which is also complete and so worth a read. In fact, just go over to Thea's LJ and read whatever's there - I pretty much guarantee satisfaction!

Anyone on my flist who is exhausted by the angst in Magpie and wants a little respite... I recommend you mosey on over to [livejournal.com profile] thismaz's LJ and check out Silk and Dragons.

It's a Merlin PWP that's beautifully written and will make your toes curl with the hotness. Okay, I'm biased because I had the pleasure of doing the beta, but that's by the by. Don't be put off if you're not into Merlin - I'm not into the programme, but I'm gradually getting sucked into the fic. What I especially love about this one is that although it is a PWP, it has real texture to it and you can picture both a back story and the possibilities in the future.

So I've said enough, go and read. I guarantee hot flushes and complete satisfaction.

Goes back to staring at a draft of Magpie: Chapter 15...

I’m not a big Criminal Minds fan, mainly because I’ve only really watched the odd random episode. However I do wander through the fandom from time to time out of curiosity because I have friends who like the series very much.

I came across this series of stories by [livejournal.com profile] myrna1_2_3 which I fell in love with. It’s Reid/Rossi which is a pairing even with my brief exposure to the series, I wouldn’t really have thought of, but it works wonderfully. There are eight stories in all and they are all written with such warmth, tenderness and with such a light, deft touch that it makes the achy parts ache even more.

If you’re interested, start at the bottom of her reid/rossi tags with The One Where Rossi and Hotch Play Golf and then Rossi Goes Home. I guarantee satisfaction.

Meeting [livejournal.com profile] twilightofmagic in person while we were on our little trip last week prompted me to go back and have a trawl back through her wonderful fic. After all, I dropped some anvil-sized hints about sequels, so it seemed only polite to go back and have a wallow in the originals.

This week I revisited Voices in the Night, probably my favourite of all her stories, which is saying a lot because there is so much quality stuff to choose from.

It’s post Chosen and NFA, and an exhausted Giles seems to be having dreams about Wesley. That sounds simple, but this story is anything but simple. It’s complex, clever, sad, hot, terrifying and beautifully written. Giles is so battered by the weight of his responsibilities and the decisions from his past and Wesley is by turn heartbreaking, beautiful, gauche and scary as hell as the story progresses. Hmm, I’m going to have to crack my thesaurus, if I carry on like this. You can gather how much I love this story, so if you haven’t read it, do yourself a huge favour and read. Even if Giles/Wes isn’t your cup of tea, and it really isn’t mine, I guarantee satisfaction. Oh and the OC’s are great too, even the ones that only appear briefly have reasons to be there and are beautifully drawn.

Stares at you, why are you still here? Go, read…now!
