Just when I thought Brexit was no laughing matter, I was pootling through The Guardian online and came across this little gem.

Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, writers back in the day of the very wonderful Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister have resurrected the peerless Sir Humphrey Appleby to explain Brexit to a new minister.

As I was reading I could just hear Nigel Hawthorne speaking. Brilliant stuff.

And now, I want them to write Sir Humphrey trying to explain Trump!

Anyway, you can find the article right here Yes Minister Brexit Special: Sir Humphrey Explains All

I'm not quite sure how this happened, but I seem to be writing my [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles story. It's not like I meant to do it (but not in a 'dog ate my homework, kind of a way...), but I just started musing and then I started writing and then all of a sudden I've got nearly 1500 words and it looks like it might be all about Giles, even if Xander won't stop talking at the moment.

Hey ho, I've got about eight different stories in my head at the moment, but my brain wants to write something that's not needed until June at the earliest. My brain is weird...

So following up yesterday's mainly US focused meme, today we have a Brit version that was originated by [livejournal.com profile] cmcmck and most of my flist seem to be doing - looks at [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat, [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee and [livejournal.com profile] gillo. So I thought I might as well join in. :)

Brit meme thingy... )

So everyone seems to be doing this household meme, and being a sheep, I decided to play too. It's bizarrely nosy, but I suppose that's part of the fun.

Well, we have progress. We’re in the new house – which is actually a very old house – but the point is that we are in. We have no bathroom at the moment because major plumbing work needs doing, so it’ll be a washing in the sink scenario until that’s sorted – oh joy! But the plumbing needs doing, so there is no getting around it.

On the upside, this house has so many built in old bookshelves, that combined with our own numerous bookcases, for the first time ever, we’re in the pleasant position of having too much shelf space and not enough books. Will anyone give me odds on how long it will take us to remedy that situation! The other upside is that while I was taking books out of boxes, I was discovering things I’d completely forgotten I had, so I can foresee a major reread on the cards in the not too distant future. From where I’m sitting I can see Wilkie Collins sitting next to Gore Vidal, sitting next to Joan Didion, sitting next to Robert Heinlen, sitting next to Vikram Seth – can you imagine the conversation around the dinner table if they were actually there in real life!

Lovely to wake up to peace and quiet, sunshine and the birds twittering and no town noise – there’s a reason we wanted to be in the country. However, Mr S was looking out the window and noticed a statue in next door’s back garden. He turned and said, hey, that statue looks a bit like a Weeping Angel – then he went down stairs to make the tea and left me curled up under the duvet, trying not to blink! *g*

Anyway, just thought I’d drop in and say hi, since it’s ages since I’ve been around. Hopefully in the coming weeks as we finally get the things out of boxes that have been packed since last August, I’ll be a little more active. I might even try to see if I remember how to do that putting pen to paper thingy, but let’s not get crazy!

Hope everyone is well

Much love

Seven Day of Self Promotion Meme – Day 7 – Something you’re just really proud of!

So here we are at the final day. It’s been interesting going back through old and not so old stuff again. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment and taken a chance on stuff they hadn’t come across before, I can’t say enough how much I appreciate it. And I’ve had fun adding other new stuff to my reading list from others who have been posting their own self recs.

So now to this last category – something I’m just really proud of! I scratched my head about this one as I’m proud of certain things for different reasons, but in the end I chose Perfect World. I still look at it now and think, yep, I don’t think I’d do anything differently if I wrote it now. I also really like that it’s ambiguous and readers can decide what they think the back story is because it could have a number of interpretations. Again, for anyone who isn't in to slash, rest assured that this is Gen and also a one-shot.

I hope everyone is having a good day

Seven Days of Self Promotion Meme – Day 6 – Something from a minor fandom/pairing/character

I’m a day behind because I didn’t get online at all yesterday – I think I was beginning to get the shakes by the end of the day. So I know apart from not posting, I’m way behind with answering comments and commenting on other people’s posts, so apologies. I will try to catch up over the weekend.

Anyway back to the meme...

I really scratched my head on this one because I mainly stick to Buffy and I mainly stick to major characters, but then I remembered the madness that was ‘curtain fic’. I blame [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni because I had said in one of my snowflake challenge posts that I had a yen to write Xander/Andrew and she made a comment about fluffy Spike/Riley and [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat made a comment about Spiley curtain fic and one thing led to another.

The madness is in the comments section and you can find it right here... *g*

Seven Days of Self Promotion Meme – Day 5 – Something for a major fandom/pairing/character

Daddy’s Boy was my Wish ‘verse fic and I found it pretty shocking what kind of images were rattling around in this genteel middle-aged brain! *g* Vamp Xander, Vamp Willow and Spike and mind games in the dark.

It started off as a one shot for [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse because the prompt was 'swank' and the word just conjured up Vamp Xander in my head, and all of a sudden over subsequent weeks it grew into a five part series because I needed to know what happened next. I’m pretty fond of this one. Oh, and unlike yesterday’s post, this one is definitely slash for the main part and just a little bit twisted...
sparrow2000: (sparrow)
Seven Days of Self Promotion Meme – Day 4 – Something you made just for yourself

The reason I started writing fanfic was because I had a plot bunny that wouldn’t go away, or more specifically, I had a few lines in my head that wouldn’t go away and after confessing this to [livejournal.com profile] thismaz the first time we met, I found the confidence to try to put the idea on paper. The result was Memento Mori.

It’s obvious to me reading it now that it’s an early work, but I’m still pretty proud of it. It uses the end of S6 Buffy as a jumping off point and what started off as a story that was supposed to be about Xander and Willow, turned into a story about the relationship between Xander and Giles. It also ended completely differently from my original intention, but looking at now, I wonder how I thought it could ever have ended any other way. Funny how stories take on a life of their own. This is a Gen story, just in case you wondered! *g*

Seven Days of Self Promotion Meme – Day 3 – Something you made for someone else

I guess you could say that all my [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse stories were written for someone else because they were all prompt driven. However the one fic I wrote for a specific person, wasn't actually written for TtM. It's Watching Paint Dry. This is set in my Perceptions ‘verse, but you don’t need to have read the others to enjoy. It’s S/X, so be warned if slash isn't your cup of cocoa and is a peek at what the boys are up to after they left Sunnydale for San Francisco. It was written for the very lovely [livejournal.com profile] laazikaat as a thank you for all her amazing work over at the Spander Files over the years.
sparrow2000: (sparrow)
Something new

Well my newest thing is my current WiP, The Beating of the Bounds, so that’s probably not the thing to point at.

So I took one step back from that and came up with one of the stories I did for last year’s [livejournal.com profile] fall_for_sx. Searching for Jim was written because we were in Paris last summer and visited Pere Lachaise cemetery. The atmosphere was so amazing that I just knew I had to write a story set there. It seemed an appropriate place for Xander and Spike to go on a date and I’d intended it to be very light hearted. But what I didn’t expect is the vampire would get all introspective about the nature of commemorating death and his own dual nature. Good job he had a boyfriend willing to listen to him….
sparrow2000: (sparrow)
So I’m staring blankly at my [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles at the moment and not getting very far and although I don’t do very many memes, this one caught my eye because it allowed me to go through my completed fics and remind myself that yes, fics do get completed and this one will as well – eventually...

[livejournal.com profile] snickfic created the meme, and I picked it up via [livejournal.com profile] aadler and [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni.

“I think that many of us like talking about our and linking to our work but are embarrassed to do so without excuse, so I am making us an excuse. Behold, the Seven Days of Self-Promotion Meme, inspired by another recent meme but with more categories, all obviously customizable as you see fit. Notice that the categories are very broad, so you can talk about your art or vids or meta or whatever if you don’t write fic.

The Days:
1. Something old
2. Something new
3. Something you made for someone else
4. Something you made just for yourself
5. Something for a major fandom/pairing/character
6. Something for a minor fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you’re just really proud of

And then other people can read your discussion and follow your links to your fanworks (and maybe comment on them?) and you can read their discussion and follow their links and comment on them, and it will all be lovely.”

So without further ado – Something Old

It was 2006, it was my second week at [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse and the prompt was ‘Wergeld’ – I stared and thought, what the hell am I going to do with that... What I did was Of Slayers, Smoochies and Other Obstacles to World Domination. It's an ensemble Buffy one-shot and while I didn't set out to write basically a missing episode, that's more or less what happened, which I think does demonstrate the interesting paths some prompts can take you down. I look back and it's obvious to me that this is very early writing from me, but I still think it has a certain charm. *g*

Randomness

sparrow2000: (sparrow)
So I am off sick from work today and went for a short walk to get some air. And that's when the random unexpectedness occurred - at the bottom of our street there was a film crew, who were filming stuff for Grace Point, the US version of Broadchurch (I say US, even though Victoria and surroundings is masquerading as a small seaside town in California *g*). Alas I saw no David Tennant, who has apparently wrapped his stuff, but there was many, many random crew members standing around drinking coffee.

No pics because there really wasn't anything to take pics of, save the aforementioned random crew members. But it did add a little bit of something different to an otherwise very blah day.

And I really should be using this unexpected down time to try to start something for [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles but the brain is not for cooperating today

I hope everyone is well

I'm feeling kind of pleased with myself as I've just finished the first draft of a new multi-part story, and with the speed I write that's a big Yay! I’m going to put it away for a couple of weeks and then start the fun times of printing out the first drafts, scribbling on them, sticking posting notes with arrows and exclamations marks pointing out plot holes, logic bombs and wtf moments. Hopefully by the time I’ve done all that it will be in a fit state to ship to [livejournal.com profile] thismaz, for a chapter by chapter beta without her eyeballs starting to bleed.

RL is very busy at the moment, so all those good intentions will probably take me through the rest of April and into May, but with a following wind, I might be able to start posting for real at the start of June. Keeps fingers crossed behind my back...

Oh and if anyone is interested, the story is the sequel to Cracks in the World, my pre S1 AU that kept me out of mischief through the summer of 2012.

It' a lovely sunny April day here, so I hope things are good with everyone :)

Just come in from my first beginners yoga class and at the moment I’m a mixture of being proud of myself for going (I’m really not a group activity kind of a gal) and just knackered because I’m even stiffer than I thought I was.

I’ve been thinking about trying yoga for a while, but there’s always been a reason not to do it. But there’s a new yoga studio just opened up a 10 minute walk away from our place, so I really don’t have any excuse, especially given that I walk by it on the way home from work. Combined with that, they’re doing a beginner’s special of $50 for the first month with unlimited classes, so since it was the first of the month, I gave myself a kick in the arse (something I’ll be able to do with more flexibility if I keep up the yoga! *g*) and went.

Despite the being knackered, it was a good class and I was actually surprised how emotional I felt in the middle of it – very unexpected.

Now all I need is for all that increased blood flow to kick my brain in gear so I can get on with writing some fic! *g*

BTW: I’m really behind with my flist, so apologies if I haven’t commented on something yet. I’ll get there.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend

I looked at the calendar this morning and freaked out to discover it was January 29th. I mean, yes, I knew it was because I've just done all the admin stuff that comes around at the end of the month, but at the same time, I have no idea where the hell January went.

So first of all, I wanted to wish everyone a very, very, very belated Happy New Year! :)

Also to say that my main fandom related exploit over the last few weeks was being involved in [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies [livejournal.com profile] feedbackathon. This was a great idea to put forward three stories that you wanted feedback on, and they would be assigned to three other participants who promised to feedback on a minimum of one of your chosen stories. And of course, I would get three writers and their nominations in return.

Anyway, the [livejournal.com profile] feedbackathon was a really interesting idea. It got me reading stories that I wouldn’t have read in the normal run of things, because the authors aren’t on my normal radar, but I’m thrilled to bits that I got the opportunity to read their stuff. I know that some of the WiP’s I read, I’ll now be following, even though I wouldn’t have followed those particular pairings or ships in the normal scheme of things. See, it’s a new year and I’m open to new things – go me!

I would urge you to hop on over the [livejournal.com profile] feedbackathon's Master List and check out all the other lovely fic on offer – and don’t forget to leave feedback for the authors! I know there is a ton of stuff there that I want to read that I haven't got around to yet.

I’d also like to say that I really appreciated the comments I got on my stuff – I got some wonderful feedback and some very interesting, valuable and insightful concrit, and I made a couple of new friends, which is a nice bonus.

My next fandom task is to do my rec list update, so I don't have five years worth of stuff to update like I did last time. I might even get that done today because looking out of the window, the rain is coming down in sheets, so I suspect I won't be going anywhere this afternoon!

I hope everyone is doing well.

Much love
